Dec. 15-16: TAKS Review Game

We played a team game to review the practice TASK test we took. See me personally to go over your exam if you did not attend class for the game.

I also collected word find and crossword puzzles that were started last week.

Last day to submit attendance reports for a dropped grade is Friday.

Dec. 13-14th: Fragments, Cause and Effect

After reviewing the TAKS practice, I was able to identify a few areas that are causing us to miss questions.

1. Cause/Effect

2. Possessive Punctuation

3. Identifying Incomplete Sentences.

We've known about the possessive and we'll continue to work on it. I'm afraid that our cause/effect issues are due to not reading carefully or rereading for answers. Finding fragments needs to be fixed immediately because of how many revising and editing questions require this skill.

In class:

- we played a group game to identify fragments

- as groups, we corrected the fragments and turned them in

- individually we listed three strengths and three weaknesses that we think we have (effect) and then proved it by offering an example of a situation when we realized this (cause)

- I read some to the class and we discussed whether the proof was adequate

Dec. 7-10th: TAKS Practice, Word Find, Crossword Puzzle

These two days we completed a practice TAKS Test (25 questions), found literary terms in a word find, and completed a crossword puzzle based on texts we have read this semester (authors and genres).

Remember that I will drop your lowest grade if you bring an attendance report to me.

Hours must be made up before January 12th. I'm so proud of the 20 that came to Saturday school from 9:00 to 12:00.

Anyone else needing extra credit should bring assignments to a tutoring session so we can conference (all mornings and b-day afternoons).

Nov. 12, 15 - "The Crisis" by Thomas Paine

1. Find examples of literary techniques

2. Paraphrase the selection in four sentences

3. Two journal entries as if you were a soldier in the Continental Army. One where you are thinking abut leaving and one after hearing the essay.
